Chapter 6 - THE MOTHER WHO WANTED CLAIRE GONE BEFORE CLOSING
Linda denied participating in a financial plan.
She said she disliked Claire personally.
At least that was honest.
Then she admitted:
she wanted Daniel divorced before the company sale.
Why?
“Clean break.”
Maya asked during deposition:
“Clean for whom?”
Linda answered:
“My son.”
There.
Then Harold’s role emerged.
He had offered Daniel bridge financing years earlier to keep the construction company alive.
Outstanding family note:
$380,000.
If Daniel’s company sale closed, Harold would be repaid.
If divorce litigation froze or complicated sale proceeds, repayment might be delayed.
Harold therefore had money at stake.
He called Claire “a distraction” in emails.
Then:
Resolve domestic problem before transaction.
Not:
help the marriage.
Resolve the problem.
Claire was the problem.
Then Linda’s texts were uglier.
LINDA:
She thinks living here makes her family.
HAROLD:
She married Daniel.
LINDA:
Not the same.
Claire read that line twice.
All the years of being told to learn her place suddenly had legal architecture behind them.
She was welcome enough to support Daniel.
Not welcome enough to claim equal standing.
Then investigators recovered deleted kitchen footage from a local backup device Daniel missed.
The deletion itself became important.
Daniel had told police he never touched the security system after the incident.
Router logs disagreed.
At 8:43 p.m., eleven minutes after Claire left with paramedics, Daniel’s account accessed the camera console.
Two clips were exported.
One clip was deleted.
Then the system was shut down.
Which clip disappeared?
The wider kitchen angle.
The one showing the stove.
Daniel’s attorney said panic.
Maybe.
Then another log showed the file copied to an external drive before deletion.
That meant Daniel had preserved it privately while removing it from ordinary access.
Why?
The prosecution argued he wanted control over which version police saw.
Daniel’s lawyer said he was simply backing up family security footage.
The jury would eventually decide what to believe.
Claire had already decided.
The camera had recorded the dinner from another angle.
It showed Daniel inspecting the steak.
Claire offering to fix it.
Daniel walking toward her.
Then the grab.
Then the stove.
No ambiguity.
Linda stepping over Claire.
Harold raising his glass.
Audio:
“She deserved it.”
The case changed.
Daniel’s lawyer stopped calling it “mutual combat.”
