Chapter 3 - THE AUDIT

Daniel Mercer arrived at the hospital forty-one minutes later.

He saw his wife first.

Vanessa sat in a separate interview room with a police officer outside the door.

She tried to stand when Daniel passed.

He kept walking.

Then he entered Evelyn’s room.

His mother looked smaller beneath the hospital blanket.

Not weak.

Smaller because machines surrounded her.

Daniel stopped.

“Mom.”

Evelyn looked at him.

“You took your time.”

His face broke.

He crossed the room and took her hand.

“I was forty miles away.”

“That explains thirty minutes.”

She squeezed his fingers.

He laughed once through tears.

Then looked toward the door.

“What happened?”

Evelyn did not answer immediately.

She asked:

“How much did Vanessa tell you about Mercer Coastal?”

Daniel’s expression changed.

“Why?”

“Answer.”

“She said the audit was routine.”

“It wasn’t.”

Mercer Coastal Holdings managed several waterfront properties, marina leases, and a chain of boutique rehabilitation spas partly inherited from Evelyn’s late husband.

Daniel served as chief operating officer.

Vanessa had no formal executive role.

She did, however, manage the Mercer Foundation’s charity events and occasionally handled vendor relationships.

That access should never have reached corporate transfers.

Yet nine days earlier, forensic accountant Lena Ortiz found $2.8 million in irregular vendor payments.

Three shell companies.

All connected through overlapping addresses.

All approved through a temporary administrative credential.

Credential owner:

Daniel Mercer.

Daniel had denied authorizing them.

Evelyn believed him.

Mostly.

Then the audit found something else.

Each transfer was supported by scanned approval pages carrying Evelyn’s signature.

Those were false.

That was why she had started watching family behavior more closely.

Then Vanessa brought up the beach house.

Again.

And again.

“I told her no,” Evelyn said.

Daniel looked toward the door.

“She said you promised it to us.”

“I promised nothing.”

“Mom—”

“She asked me to transfer it before the audit meeting.”

Daniel went still.

“Why?”

“I think the house was supposed to cover something.”

“Cover what?”

“That’s what we’re going to find out.”

The next morning, the watch recording was copied by investigators.

Vanessa’s voice was clear.

I WANT YOUR BEACH HOUSE!

I OWE TWO POINT EIGHT MILLION!

Then:

You think Daniel will let me go to prison? You think your precious son is going to choose you after I tell him you were the one moving money?

Daniel listened once.

Then removed his wedding ring.

He did not throw it.

Did not make a speech.

May you like

He simply set it on the table.

That frightened Evelyn more than anger would have.
