Chapter 5 - DANIEL'S PASSWORD
The fraudulent transfers came through Daniel’s credential.
That problem did not disappear simply because his wife confessed to debt.
Investigators needed to know how she got access.
Daniel insisted he never gave her his password.
Then Lena Ortiz asked a different question.
“Did you ever give her your phone?”
Daniel frowned.
“Of course.”
“Unlocked?”
“Yes.”
“For how long?”
“Sometimes hours.”
“Did you use an authentication app for payment approvals?”
Silence.
Daniel’s face changed.
Yes.
The transfer process required:
Login.
Password.
Authentication prompt.
Approval code.
Vanessa did not need Daniel’s password if his browser saved it.
She only needed his phone during the approval window.
Lena reviewed device logs.
On all three transfer dates, Daniel’s phone showed biometric approval from the same device.
His phone.
But Daniel had been elsewhere.
Date one:
Golf tournament.
Date two:
Board dinner.
Date three:
Overnight hospital visit with Evelyn after her surgery.
Who had access to the phone?
Vanessa.
She often carried it for him while he played golf.
She borrowed it at the dinner because her battery died.
She kept it overnight while Daniel slept in the hospital chair.
Opportunity.
Still not proof.
Then IT found a photo.
Automatically backed up from Vanessa’s tablet.
Daniel’s phone screen.
Authentication app open.
Taken one minute before the second transfer approval.
Daniel stared at it.
“She photographed my code?”
Lena nodded.
“She may have photographed the setup screen too.”
Daniel looked sick.
Evelyn watched him.
Not because she doubted his innocence now.
Because she saw another truth.
He had been careless with access because marriage taught him that privacy between spouses was suspicious.
Vanessa exploited trust he never thought needed boundaries.
