Chapter 6 - VANESSA'S STORY
Vanessa hired attorney Abigail Stone.
Smart.
Abigail’s first move was to separate the spa incident from the financial case.
She argued Vanessa never intended to kill Evelyn.
The tanning pod had automatic thermal shutoffs.
The water damaged the control display but not the independent safety relay.
The heat level, while dangerous to Evelyn’s recovering skin, was unlikely to be fatal within the short duration involved.
That mattered legally.
Vanessa’s conduct was still violent.
Still coercive.
Still potentially criminal.
But intent had to be proven carefully.
Then Vanessa offered a story.
She claimed Evelyn had promised the beach house to Daniel and Vanessa years earlier.
False, Evelyn said.
Vanessa claimed the $2.8 million was not stolen but temporarily routed through vendor accounts to cover “family liabilities” Evelyn knew about.
False, Evelyn said.
Vanessa claimed Daniel knew more than he admitted.
That one hurt.
Daniel’s attorney advised him not to react emotionally.
So investigators checked.
One email complicated matters.
Daniel to Vanessa, eight months earlier:
If Mom ever lets us have Hale Point, we could use the equity to clear everything.
Vanessa’s reply:
She will. She has to.
Daniel responded:
Don’t push her.
Not criminal.
Not authorization.
But enough to show Daniel knew there were debts.
“How much did you know?” Evelyn asked him.
Daniel looked down.
“I knew Vanessa owed maybe six hundred thousand.”
Evelyn stared.
“Six?”
“She said business losses. Family loans. Credit cards.”
“And you didn’t tell me.”
“It was our marriage.”
“No.”
Evelyn’s voice hardened.
“It became my business when she built a loan around my house.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
“I know.”
He had hidden Vanessa’s financial problems because he was ashamed.
He thought he could fix them.
That concealment helped the scheme grow.
