Daniel blamed himself.
Too much at first.
That worried Evelyn.
He moved into a hotel.
Took leave from Mercer Coastal.
Offered to resign.
The board refused immediate resignation and instead placed him on administrative review while the credential failures were investigated.
That was appropriate.
Evelyn told him so.
“You don’t get to punish yourself instead of being examined.”
Daniel almost smiled.
“That sounds like you.”
“It should.”
The review found poor security practices.
Saved passwords.
Shared unlocked devices.
Informal spouse access to business communications.
Failure to disclose Vanessa’s known financial distress as a potential conflict.
Daniel received formal discipline from the company board.
He lost certain approval authority for a year.
He also remained employed.
Some family members said Evelyn should protect him completely.
She refused.
Protection was what had created this mess.
People protecting Vanessa’s embarrassment.
Daniel protecting the marriage.
Peter protecting a wealthy client from questions.
Staff protecting family privacy.
The result was $2.8 million missing and a sixty-eight-year-old woman trapped inside a heating pod.
No more protection from facts.
Daniel entered therapy.
Not because Evelyn demanded it.
Because he finally understood his instinct to rescue people made him easy to manipulate.
Vanessa had told him for years:

He kept fixing.
Credit cards.
Loans.
Tax issues.
Secret investment losses.
