Chapter 9 - THE TRIAL

Vanessa’s criminal case took fourteen months.

The charges covered two different categories.

Financial conduct.

And the spa attack.

Prosecutors did not claim attempted murder as their cleanest theory.

The evidence supported stronger, more precise counts involving aggravated assault, unlawful confinement, coercion, property-related extortion, fraud, identity misuse, and theft-related offenses.

The watch recording was central.

Not because it captured every act visually.

Because it captured Vanessa’s motive in her own voice.

I WANT YOUR BEACH HOUSE.

I OWE TWO POINT EIGHT MILLION.

Then:

You think Daniel will let me go to prison?

The defense argued panic.

Desperation.

No intent to cause fatal harm.

The jury heard medical testimony about Evelyn’s recent graft surgery and the risk of heat exposure.

They heard how Vanessa increased the setting after locking the lid.

They saw photographs of the flooded controls.

They heard Michael Trent describe pounding on the door after receiving the emergency alert from the spa’s safety monitor.

That was another twist Evelyn had not known.

Her watch did not summon Michael.

The damaged control panel triggered a separate system fault at the spa desk.

Both systems converged.

The world did not save Evelyn through one clever trick.

It saved her through redundancy.

That mattered.

Vanessa was convicted on the central fraud and assault/coercion counts.

Peter Vale pled guilty to lesser financial facilitation offenses and lost his license.

The private lender recovered part of its money from frozen accounts and insurance.

Mercer Coastal recovered most, not all, of the $2.8 million.

Daniel filed for divorce.

Vanessa fought it for six months.

Then stopped.
