Chapter 7 - THE LAWYER WHO BUILT THE PAPER

Peter Vale disappeared two days after police requested an interview.

That made him look guilty.

Then he surrendered through counsel.

Less dramatic.

More useful.

He admitted preparing VLM Coastal Properties.

He admitted drafting the beach-house transfer package.

He denied knowing Vanessa planned violence.

He also denied knowing corporate money had been stolen.

Then investigators showed him the lender documents.

His signature appeared as counsel certification.

He had represented that Vanessa held “reasonable expectancy of near-term acquisition.”

Based on what?

Peter answered:

“A family letter.”

The letter supposedly came from Evelyn.

It stated:

I intend to transfer Hale Point to Daniel and Vanessa before year-end.

Signature:

Evelyn Mercer.

Forgery.

Peter claimed Vanessa gave it to him.

Did he verify?

No.

Why not?

“She was family.”

There it was again.

Family as substitute for verification.

Then Peter turned over his emails.

Vanessa had written:

Once the property lands, the corporate discrepancy disappears.

Peter responded:

Do not explain that in email.

Evelyn stared at the exchange.

He knew there was a discrepancy.

Maybe not exactly how it arose.

Enough to know the house transfer was connected to covering it.

Peter agreed to cooperate.

The paper architecture came apart.

The private lender advanced Vanessa $2.4 million based on future collateral.

She used part to pay personal debts.

Then market losses wiped out roughly $900,000.

She needed more.

She created fake vendors and routed $2.8 million from Mercer Coastal.

Some money covered the private lender’s interest.

Some covered older debts.

Some was moved into accounts investigators later froze.

The beach house was supposed to be the final asset that made the fraud look like temporary borrowing rather than theft.

Evelyn’s refusal destroyed the exit.

So Vanessa tried to force the transfer.

When that failed, she locked Evelyn in the pod.

Not because of one sudden rage.

Because every earlier lie required a larger one.
