Chapter 11 - THE STATEMENT LILY WASN'T SUPPOSED TO HEAR

During a supervised visit, Sarah argued with David in the hallway.
Lily overheard.
David said:
“You can’t keep acting like Ben being disabled means Lily belongs to you.”
Sarah snapped:
“He is not her equal.”
Lily froze.
David:
“He raised her.”
Sarah:
“Because I was gone.”
“Exactly.”
Then Sarah said:
“I am her real parent.”
Lily stepped into the hallway.
“No.”
Sarah turned.
Lily’s face was red.
“Dad is real.”
Sarah softened instantly.
“That’s not what I meant.”
“You said it.”
“I meant biological—”
“You said real.”
Lily ran to the bathroom and locked the door.
Sarah sat outside crying.
For once, no performance.
David called Karen.
The visit ended early.
Later Sarah wrote Ben an apology.
Not Lily.
Ben read it.
Then said:
“She should say sorry to Lily.”
Rachel nodded.
Ben was learning something important.
