Chapter 7 - SARAH'S HOUSE
Karen inspected Sarah’s home.
Beautiful.
Three bedrooms.
Gated neighborhood.
New husband named David Cole.
No criminal history.
Steady income.
Sarah had built stability.
That mattered.
She was not a cartoon villain.
The home was appropriate.
Lily would be physically safe there.
Then Karen noticed a room already decorated.
Yellow blanket.
Books.
Framed photograph of Lily.
Name letters on wall:
LILY.
Sarah smiled.
“I wanted her to feel expected.”
Karen asked:
“Did Lily choose any of this?”
“No.”
“Has she slept here?”
“No.”
“Does she know you’re planning to move her here full-time?”
Sarah hesitated.
“She knows that’s the goal.”
Karen asked:
“Whose goal?”
Sarah’s expression cooled.
Then David spoke privately.
He had concerns.
Sarah had told him Ben could barely care for himself.
After meeting Ben once, David doubted that description.
“He’s different than us.”
Karen waited.
“But Lily watches him like he’s the safest person in the room.”
Then David admitted another fact.
Sarah’s mother, Eleanor, had recently changed her estate plan.
Eleanor was wealthy.
Very wealthy.
She created an education trust for Lily.
Could Sarah access it?
No.
Trustee controlled distributions.
Then why relevant?
Because Eleanor also conditioned a separate $1.5 million family-support bequest to Sarah on maintaining “substantial restored family relationship with descendants.”
Karen frowned.
That did not automatically mean custody.

Sarah filed for custody six weeks after learning of the amendment.
