Mara did not fake Evelyn’s death.
That mattered.
Authorities did not issue a false death certificate.
No public agency lied.
Instead, they allowed uncertainty to remain.
The family knew Evelyn fell into freezing water.
They knew they left her behind.
They knew no rescue report had become public.
They knew no body had been recovered.
Then Grant did exactly what Mara expected.
He moved fast.
Too fast.
Within forty-eight hours, Wren Holdings general counsel received a draft succession notice claiming Evelyn was “presumed deceased under extraordinary circumstances.”
Legally absurd that early.
But strategically revealing.
Grant requested temporary voting authority over her shares.
Henry supported it.
Claire requested access to Evelyn’s executive files.
Margaret signed nothing.
That interested Mara.
Then the family filed an emergency petition asking a court to appoint Grant as temporary custodian of Evelyn’s corporate interests due to disappearance and likely death.
Again:
Too fast.
Mara quietly entered an appearance through sealed counsel filings.
The court did not grant Grant control.
Instead, it set a hearing.
Grant told the board the process was “routine.”
It was not.
While he pushed succession, Mara built evidence.
Bank records.
Emails.
The merger file.
Private debt.
Evelyn stayed in a protected rental property under another name.
Not hiding from law.
Hiding from the people who believed they had already killed her.
