Chapter 9 - THE TRIALS
The criminal cases took almost two years.
Grant, Henry, and Claire faced different charges based on different levels of conduct.
No one got identical punishment.
That mattered.
Grant was convicted on the strongest combination of conspiracy, attempted homicide-related conduct, kidnapping/coercion elements, obstruction, and corporate fraud counts supported by the evidence.
Henry faced similarly severe consequences for the physical restraint, planning, and abandonment.
Claire cooperated.
Her sentence was lower but still substantial.
She had grabbed Evelyn.
Mocked her.
Stayed silent as the boat left.
Cooperation did not erase that.
Margaret was not charged with the same violent conspiracy after investigators found insufficient proof she agreed in advance.
But she faced legal scrutiny for failing to seek help and for later false statements during the initial missing-person investigation.
She eventually entered a plea on lesser obstruction-related conduct.
Evelyn attended sentencing.
Not every day of trial.
She refused to build her recovery around watching them fall.
At Grant’s sentencing, he looked at her.
For the first time since childhood, he seemed small.
“I’m sorry.”
Evelyn said nothing.
