Chapter 5 - MARGARET'S SILENCE
Margaret Wren broke first.
Not publicly.
Privately.
She contacted Mara through a church friend.
The message was simple:
I need to know if my daughter is alive.
Mara showed Evelyn.
“What do you want to do?”
Evelyn stared at the words for a long time.
Then:
“Tell her nothing.”
Mara nodded.
Hard.
But fair.
Margaret had stood on the boat.
She watched.
She said nothing.
A week later, another message came.
I have the papers.
This time Evelyn looked up.
“What papers?”
Margaret had secretly taken the original unsigned share-transfer documents from Grant’s office after the lake incident.
Why?
She did not know.
Guilt, perhaps.
Fear.
Instinct.
They contained handwritten notes.
Henry’s handwriting:
If E refuses, succession immediately.
Grant’s:
Need signature OR absence.
Claire’s:
Board before search drags out.
Mara stared.
“This is ugly.”
“Is it enough?”
“Enough for what?”
“To prove they planned to kill me.”
“No.”
Evelyn hated the answer.
Mara continued.
“It proves they planned for your absence. We still prove exactly what they intended on the boat with everything else.”
