Grant’s attorney gave him a defense.
It was better than Evelyn expected.
He claimed the lake incident was an accident during an emotional family dispute.
The family wanted Evelyn to sign emergency voting documents.
True.
They argued.
True.
Her phone went into the lake.
Grant claimed it was knocked away.
False, Evelyn said.
Then Evelyn “lost balance near the stern.”
The camera audio captured shouting but not a perfect view of the shove.
Grant claimed Henry reached for her.
Not restrained her.
Claire claimed she grabbed Evelyn’s wrist to help.
Henry claimed:
“Once you’re gone, the company heals”
meant:
“Once you’re gone from management.”
Awful.
But linguistically possible.
Mara listened to the defense.
Then said:
“This is why we need more than memory.”
The boat itself became evidence.
Investigators recovered it from a private Wren dock.
Forensic inspection found torn fabric from Evelyn’s coat caught beneath the stern rail.
Positioning suggested force against the edge.
Not a simple slip.
Then Samuel Price testified about where he found Evelyn.
Nearly half a mile from the point Grant claimed she fell.
Boat GPS records showed the Wren vessel continued moving for thirteen minutes after Evelyn went overboard.
No emergency stop.
No search pattern.
No 911 call.
Nothing.
