Chapter 1 - FREEZE EVERY ACCOUNT

Noah had asked for one thing on his tenth birthday.
A chocolate cake.
Not a new phone.
Not a game console.
Not a trip.
Just chocolate cake with blue frosting and ten candles.
Elena Mercer had laughed when he told her.
“That’s it?”
Noah shrugged.
“I like cake.”
So she gave him one.
A huge one.
Three layers.
Dark chocolate.
Blue frosting.
Silver stars around the edges.
His name piped carefully across the top.
The party was held at Arturo Vale’s estate outside Scottsdale, where Elena had grown up beneath palm trees, stone columns, and rules that always seemed to change depending on who Arturo wanted to please.
Elena was thirty-six now.
Successful.
Independent.
A mother.
She had spent years making sure Noah’s childhood felt nothing like hers.
No public humiliation.
No affection used as leverage.
No money tied to obedience.
She should have known Arturo would resent that.
The pool patio was crowded with relatives, neighbors, business associates, and children.
Noah stood behind his cake while everyone sang.
His cheeks were red from embarrassment.
He was smiling anyway.
Elena stood beside him.
“Make a wish.”
Noah closed his eyes.
Sofia moved behind him.
Fifteen.
Lucía’s daughter.
She was holding a large plastic bucket.
Elena saw it too late.
Sofia tipped it.
Mud crashed over Noah’s head.
Across his shoulders.
Down the front of his clean white birthday shirt.
The rest hit the cake.
Blue frosting collapsed beneath brown sludge.
For one second, nobody moved.
Noah opened his eyes.
Mud ran down his face.
He looked at the ruined cake.
Then at the guests.
A laugh exploded across the patio.
Arturo.
Elena’s father.
Sixty-four.
Silver-haired.
Expensive linen shirt.
Drink in his hand.
He laughed so hard he nearly spilled it.
Lucía laughed too.
Sofia stared at Noah with the wide-eyed uncertainty of a child who suddenly realized the joke adults encouraged might not be funny.
Noah’s mouth began trembling.
Elena ran.
She pulled him into her arms.
“Hey. Hey, look at me.”
He started crying.
“Mom…”
She wiped mud from his eyes.
“What did I do?”
The question tore through her.
“You did nothing.”
Arturo was still laughing.
“It was just a joke!”
Elena slowly looked up.
Lucía smirked beside him.
“Come on, Elena. Don’t make everything dramatic.”
Noah buried his face against her.
Elena stood.
Something in her expression changed.
Not louder.
Colder.
Arturo raised his glass.
“The boy needs to toughen up.”
Elena walked toward him.
He smiled.
“You going to lecture me?”
She shoved him.
Hard enough that surprise did most of the work.
Arturo stumbled backward.
Then fell into the pool.
Water exploded upward.
Guests screamed.
Lucía stepped forward.
“What the hell is wrong with you?!”
Elena turned.
And shoved her too.
Lucía hit the water beside Arturo.
The patio went silent.
Arturo surfaced coughing.
“ELENA!”
Lucía thrashed toward the edge.
“ARE YOU CRAZY?!”
Elena walked back to Noah.
Wrapped one arm around him.
Then pulled out her phone with the other.
Her thumb moved once.
A message.
To Mara Chen.
Family counsel.
Elena looked at Arturo in the pool.
“Freeze every account. Now.”
May you like
Arturo’s face drained of color.
Lucía stopped moving.
