Chapter 6 - LUCÍA'S FIRST LIE
Lucía arrived with an attorney.
Smart.
Elena respected smart.
She did not respect the lie.
“I thought you authorized it.”
Elena sat across from her in Mara’s office.
“You signed the delegation letter.”
“Yes.”
“With my electronic signature attached.”
“Yes.”
“Where did you get it?”
Lucía hesitated.
“Dad.”
Arturo’s attorney shifted.
Elena watched both.
“Dad told you I approved?”
“Yes.”
“Did you ever ask me?”
Lucía’s jaw tightened.
“You never answer family questions.”
“That’s not an answer.”
Lucía started crying.
“I was trying to keep everything running.”
“Your boutique?”
“That was separate.”
“Paid with trust money.”
“I was going to repay it.”
Elena almost laughed.
That sentence again.
Going to repay.
Someday.
Later.
After success.
After nobody notices.
Mara asked:
“Did you know the delegation letter was not signed directly by Elena?”

Lucía looked at Arturo.
That was answer enough.
