Chapter 8 - NOAH REFUSED TO BE THE REASON

Noah heard adults talking.
Children always do.
One night he found Elena in her office surrounded by account statements.
“Are Grandpa and Aunt Lucía going to jail because of me?”
Elena immediately closed the folder.
“No.”
“But because of my birthday?”
“No.”
He looked skeptical.
She pulled him into the chair beside her.
“Your birthday made me stop ignoring things.”
“That sounds like because of me.”
Elena shook her head.
“The money problems existed before your party.”
He looked down.
“I don’t want Grandpa poor.”
That surprised her.
“Why?”
“Because then he’ll say I did it.”
Elena understood.
This was the damage Arturo had already done.
He made children feel responsible for adult consequences.
She said:
“Listen to me. If Grandpa loses money, it will be because of choices he made with money he did not control.”
Noah nodded slowly.
“And Sofia?”
“She made a bad choice too.”
“But her mom told her.”
“Yes.”
“Are we mad at her?”
Elena thought carefully.
“No.”
Noah smiled a little.
“Good.”
May you like
Elena realized her son had preserved something the adults almost destroyed.
Proportion.
