Chapter 3 - WHY ELENA CONTROLLED THE MONEY

Arturo Vale looked wealthy because Elena let him.

That truth had been hidden behind family myth.

The estate belonged to a trust.

The trust had been created by Elena’s maternal grandfather, Samuel Mercer.

He died when Elena was twenty-three.

Samuel had disliked Arturo.

Deeply.

He left the majority of his estate not to Elena’s mother, not to Arturo, but to Elena through a generation-skipping family trust.

Why?

Because he believed Arturo would consume anything he controlled.

He was right.

At twenty-five, Elena inherited voting authority over Mercer Holdings.

Commercial real estate.

Private debt.

Warehousing.

Hospitality assets.

Arturo still had lifestyle rights tied to one residence and certain capped distributions.

Lucía had education and healthcare distributions.

That was all.

But Elena had spent years quietly expanding support.

She paid property taxes.

Staff.

Maintenance.

Family trips.

Lucía’s failed boutique.

Sofia’s private school.

Arturo’s club dues.

Vehicle leases.

Medical premiums.

Not because the trust required it.

Because Arturo always said:

“We’re family.”

Elena hated the phrase.

It usually arrived five minutes before a request.

Still, she paid.
