Chapter 4 - ANDREW'S BLIND SPOT
Andrew had been a widower for six years.
Laura died from an aneurysm when Emily was three.
Sudden.
No long illness.
No goodbye.
For two years Andrew functioned like a logistics officer.
Meals.
School.
Uniforms.
Appointments.
Everything scheduled.
Grief became routine because routine still obeyed him.
Then Vanessa entered his life.
She was warm.
Funny.
Patient.
She did not demand to be called Mom.
She learned Emily’s favorite books.
Attended school events.
Sent care packages during Andrew’s training periods.
Andrew believed he had found the rare person who understood that marrying a widower meant joining a story already in progress.
That belief became his blind spot.
Whenever Emily complained about Vanessa, Andrew interpreted it as adjustment.
Whenever Vanessa complained about Emily, he interpreted it as stress.
He mediated.
Smoothed.
Explained one woman to the other.
He rarely asked:
Who is telling the truth?
May you like
Because he wanted both relationships to survive.
That made ambiguity useful.
