Chapter 1 - I HEARD EVERYTHING

Ryan Carter snatched the tablet from Emma’s hands before she could end the call.

“Give it back!”

Emma was ten, pale from recovery, wearing a loose blue shirt over the healing incision from abdominal surgery.

Ryan grabbed the full plastic trash bin beside the dryer.

Then flipped it over her.

Soft laundry, paper towels, dryer sheets, and light household trash fell across Emma’s head and shoulders.

She cried out and curled forward, both arms instinctively protecting her abdomen.

Ryan shook the bin hard.

“You should’ve given me the tablet!”

Then he raised the now-empty lightweight bin and slammed it down across her guarded upper back and shoulders.

The plastic bounced away and struck the washing machine.

Emma sobbed.

Ryan held the tablet above his head.

“Everyone babies you!”

Claire Carter rushed into the laundry room.

She froze.

Her daughter was on the floor.

Trash everywhere.

Ryan standing over her.

Claire dropped beside Emma immediately.

“What did you do to her?!”

“She wouldn’t give me the tablet.”

Claire snatched it from him.

Ryan folded his arms.

Emma clung to Claire’s sleeve.

Then the tablet spoke.

“Claire…”

Everyone froze.

Ms. Parker.

Emma’s teacher.

The video call was still connected.

“I heard everything.”

Ryan’s face drained.

Ms. Parker continued:

“This can’t be ignored.”

Claire looked slowly toward her son.

Ryan looked toward the tablet.

Then said something that made no sense.

“You don’t understand. I needed to delete something before she saw it.”

Claire’s anger sharpened.

“Delete what?”

Ryan said nothing.

Emma’s breathing hitched.

“I already saw it.”

Ryan spun toward her.

Claire stepped between them.

“What did you see?”

Emma wiped her face.

“A message.”

“What message?”

Emma looked at Ms. Parker’s image on the screen.

Then whispered:

“It said Ryan wasn’t supposed to be at school anymore.”

Claire stared at her son.

“What does that mean?”

Ryan’s jaw tightened.

Ms. Parker went quiet.

Too quiet.

Claire looked at the screen.

“You know.”

Ms. Parker exhaled.

“Yes.”

“What?”

“Ryan has been suspended for eight school days.”

Claire felt the room tilt.

Ryan had left the house every morning that week wearing his backpack.

He had come home at three-thirty.

He had complained about homework.

He had asked for lunch money.

Claire stared.

“If he’s suspended, where has he been going?”

May you like

Ryan looked away.

And suddenly the attack over a tablet was no longer about a tablet.
