Chapter 2 - THE SCHOOL DAY THAT DIDN'T EXIST
Claire took Emma to be checked after the incident.
No serious injury.
The plastic bin had struck only her guarded upper back and shoulders.
Her surgical recovery remained stable.
The physician documented the event and reminded Claire to watch for any new symptoms.
Claire also contacted police and child-safety professionals.
Ryan stayed temporarily with his father’s brother, Mark, under an agreed safety plan while the immediate situation was reviewed.
That evening Claire sat at the kitchen table with Emma’s school tablet.
Ms. Parker had sent the suspension notice.
Ryan had been removed from school after a confrontation in the cafeteria.
Official reason:
Repeated harassment of another student.
Violation of digital conduct policy.
Refusal to surrender a personal device during investigation.
Claire read it twice.
Ryan had told her nothing.
She called the assistant principal.
“Why wasn’t I notified?”
“You were.”
“No.”
“Three emails, one phone call, one certified letter.”
Claire searched.
Nothing.
Then the administrator read the email address on file.
It was Claire’s correct address.
But the school portal showed the notices had been opened.
The phone log showed someone answered the first call.
A male voice said:
“I’m Ryan’s father. Claire is unavailable. I’ll handle it.”
Claire’s ex-husband, Daniel, lived in Arizona.
He had not handled anything.
“Do you record calls?” Claire asked.
“Yes.”
The school sent the audio.
Claire listened.
The voice was young.
Trying to sound older.
Ryan.
Her own son had impersonated his father.
Then she checked the certified letter.
Signed for.
R. CARTER.
Ryan.
He had intercepted everything.
But that still did not answer where he went during suspension.
Emma sat nearby with a blanket around her shoulders.
“Mom?”
“Yes?”
“I think he went to the library.”
“Why?”
“He asked me once if my tablet worked on library Wi-Fi.”
Claire looked at the device.
Emma had been using it for home instruction while recovering.
Claire opened browser history.
Most entries were schoolwork.
Then one page appeared repeatedly.
STUDENT ACTIVITIES PORTAL.
Emma was not in student activities.
Ryan was.
Claire clicked.
A login screen opened automatically under Emma’s account.
Then a cached page appeared.
FALL FUNDRAISER — TRANSACTION REVIEW.
Amount under dispute:
$3,840.
Claire stared.
Below it:
Student coordinator:
Ryan Carter.
Status:
Access suspended pending review.
And suddenly she understood why Ryan had been desperate for Emma’s tablet.
It could still reach the system that his own account could not.
Then she saw a line at the bottom.
