Chapter 11 - DANIEL'S PLEA
Daniel accepted a negotiated plea related to the assault.
The baton.
Bruises.
Claire’s statement.
Michael’s eyewitness account.
Threats.
No need for fantasy charges.
The forced-abortion language aggravated context and safety concerns, but prosecutors did not pretend he could medically compel a procedure by decree.
He admitted:
physical assault,
coercive threats,
and a course of domestic abuse supported by evidence.
He received a custodial sentence, probation afterward, mandatory intervention programming, and strict contact conditions.
Family-court contact with Emma remained separate.
Then Daniel’s attorney submitted psychological mitigation.
Work obsession.
Anxiety.
Identity collapse.
No diagnosis erased responsibility.
Claire read none of it until sentencing.
Then Daniel spoke.
“I thought if the deal succeeded, Claire would forgive the way I got us there.”
Claire looked at him.
He continued:
“I kept moving the line between persuasion and force.”
Then:
“By the time I hit her, I had already trained myself to believe her no meant she didn’t understand enough.”
That sentence landed.
Because it explained the whole marriage.
Not only the final attack.
Then Daniel said:
“I wanted the baby before I wanted the company.”
Silence.
“I changed what mattered and then blamed Claire for not changing with me.”
Claire cried.
Not because she wanted him back.
Because he finally named it.
The judge imposed sentence.
No applause.
No revenge speech.
Then Michael asked Claire afterward:
“Feel better?”
“No.”
“Worse?”
“No.”
“What then?”

That was enough.
