Two years after the assault, Claire moved into a smaller house.
Not a mansion.
Bright kitchen.
Small yard.
One staircase.
Wooden railing.
Michael offered to replace it with marble as a joke.
Claire stared at him.
He raised both hands.
“Bad joke.”
“Very.”
Emma learned to walk there.
Daniel remained under structured parenting conditions but had progressed to longer visits.
Claire did not confuse improvement with reunion.
They communicated through a co-parenting app.

Practical.
Sometimes respectful.
Sometimes tense.

I used to think “start over” meant erase everything and build a different life.
Claire waited.

She did not answer.

Instead she felt distance.

After close, Claire can finally relax.
Claire laughed.
