Chapter 4 - SHE WILL
Claire read those two words repeatedly.
She will.
Not:
I’ll ask.
Not:
we’re discussing.
She will.
The same certainty Daniel used at home.
When Claire questioned selling the house six months earlier, he said:
“Why are you attached to this place?”
She thought he was casually considering downsizing.
He was testing resistance.
When she said she wanted to stay through the baby’s first year, he became angry.
Called her inflexible.
Said:
“You always choose comfort over opportunity.”
Now she knew which opportunity.
Then Michael asked:
“When did the physical abuse start?”
Claire hated the question.
Because the answer was not one dramatic date.
Four months earlier, Daniel grabbed her arm during an argument about finances.
Bruise.
He apologized.
Three months earlier, he shoved past her on the stairs and she struck the railing.
He said it was an accident.
Two months earlier, he squeezed both shoulders while demanding she stop “sabotaging” their future.
Then the bruises became harder to explain.
Claire wore cardigans.
Daniel apologized afterward every time.
He also returned to the same subject:
money.
Move.
House.
Future.
Then one evening he said:
“If we didn’t have a baby coming, none of this would be complicated.”
Claire snapped:
“Then maybe you shouldn’t have wanted one.”
Daniel stared at her.
He had wanted the pregnancy at first.
Very much.
That mattered.
He was not always plotting against the baby.
The buyout changed him.
Or revealed something.
Then Grace obtained Daniel’s calendar through discovery after Claire filed for protection.
A meeting eight weeks earlier:
RESTRUCTURE HOUSEHOLD BEFORE CLOSE.
Attendees:
Daniel.
Financial adviser.
Buyout partner Wade Mercer.
Notes:
sell residence,
terminate club membership,
cut discretionary spend,
delay nursery purchases.
Then one final bullet:
D. says family-size issue being addressed.
Claire went cold.
“Family-size issue?”
Michael’s voice dropped.
“He meant the baby.”
Grace said:
“Probably. But we need corroboration.”
Then Wade Mercer agreed to speak.
