Chapter 7 - THE BUYOUT PARTNERS

The other three managers voted Daniel out of the acquisition group.

Not because Claire asked.

Because his legal problems threatened financing.

Briar Hill Capital required clean disclosures.

A domestic-assault case involving coercion created lender risk.

Daniel accused Claire of destroying the deal.

Then immediately apologized.

Old instinct.

Blame her for consequences of his actions.

The other managers replaced his equity with outside capital.

The buyout survived.

That hurt Daniel more.

He had convinced himself the whole enterprise depended on him.

It didn’t.

Wade later told Claire:

“He thought if he sacrificed enough, he deserved the company.”

That psychology resembled what happened at home.

Daniel sacrificed:

time,

money,

sleep,

relationships.

Then expected the family to sacrifice too.

Not by choice.

By alignment.

Then financial discovery revealed something Claire did not expect.

Daniel had not spent money on an affair.

No hidden gambling.

No secret luxury.

Every missing dollar tied back to the buyout.

That made the betrayal cleaner.

More frightening.

He believed he was building their future.

Then Grace found one personal spreadsheet.

Title:

AFTER CLOSE.

Projected household net worth after five years:

$3.8M.

After ten:

$9.2M.

At bottom:

Claire can stop worrying once she sees what this becomes.

Again.

She will understand later.

The future used to erase present consent.

Then Michael said:

“He thought the money would make the abuse worth it.”

Claire shook her head.

“No.”

“He thought the money would prove it wasn’t abuse.”

That was more precise.

Daniel believed success would retroactively justify coercion.

If the buyout made them rich, then every ugly decision could be renamed:

necessary.

Then the police recovered the baton.

Daniel admitted using it.

No dispute.

The criminal case became straightforward.

But the financial story was still unfolding.

Because the mansion itself had a problem.

The mortgage had been refinanced six months earlier.

Claire had signed.

What exactly had she signed?
