Chapter 1 - THE WORD DEFECTIVE

The NICU was too bright for death.
Machines glowed. Monitors blinked. Nurses moved quickly without running.
Inside the incubator, Liam looked impossibly small beneath the blanket.
Emily pressed one hand against the glass.
“Please.”
No one answered.
The monitor had already gone quiet.
Daniel stood behind her in a dark suit he had never taken off from work.
Emily turned.
“Daniel.”
His face was hard.
Not broken.
Hard.
“Your defective genes killed him.”
Emily stared.
“What?”
“You heard me.”
“That’s our son.”
Daniel looked toward the incubator.
Then away.
Celia Rowan stood near the medication cart, blonde hair tied back, white coat perfectly still.
Emily looked at her.
“Tell him.”
Celia hesitated.
That hesitation would haunt Emily later.
Then Celia said:
“We found a metabolic pattern that may be inherited.”
May.
Daniel turned it into certainty.
“You knew something ran in your family.”
“No.”
“You had the genetic test.”
“They told us it was insignificant.”
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“And now he’s dead.”
Emily made a sound she did not recognize as her own.
Daniel walked away.
He did not touch Liam or Emily.
Celia watched him leave.
Then she stepped closer.
“I’m sorry.”
Emily stared at her.
“Was it me?”
Celia’s face changed.
For one terrible second, Emily thought the doctor might say no.
Instead Celia looked down.
“We need the full pathology before anyone can say more.”
But the final report came three days later.
Presumed inherited metabolic disorder.
Emily carried those words for six years.
Then Detective Marcus Hale placed a flash drive on a table in front of her.
“Mrs. Carter, your son didn’t die from a genetic condition.”
Emily stopped breathing.
“What did you just say?”
Hale pressed play.
Security footage filled the screen.
Celia entered Liam’s room after midnight.
She looked both ways.
Removed a small vial from her coat.
Connected something to the IV line.
Emily stood so fast her chair struck the wall.
“Celia?”
Hale paused the video.
Emily pointed at the screen.
“She killed my baby?”
The detective’s face remained controlled.
“There’s more.”
He opened an audio file.
Daniel’s voice:
“Make sure nobody connects it to us.”
Emily went still.
Then:
“After tonight, Emily will blame herself forever.”
Her hands hit the table.
“He knew?”
Hale looked directly at her.
“He didn’t just know.”
May you like
Emily froze.
“He helped plan the cover-up.”
