Chapter 10 - HE KNEW BEFORE THE NIGHT

Daniel denied opening the presentation.
System logs showed otherwise.
He accessed it for six minutes.
Two days before Liam received HVP-17.
Prosecutors confronted him.
His lawyer objected to calling that proof of approval.
Fair.
Opening a file was not consent.
Then investigators found Daniel’s note to Celia.
Why is Liam on this list?
Celia:
Because if he destabilizes, he fits the physiological profile.
Daniel:
Remove his identifying markers.
Celia:
There aren’t any.
Daniel:
Good.
Emily read the exchange and went cold.
Daniel had known Liam was being considered.
Then another message:
Daniel:
No intervention without me.
Celia:
You’re not the physician.
Daniel:
And you’re not risking my son or Halcyon without telling me.
That line cut both ways.
Daniel was concerned.
Also financially entangled.
Then the night of the collapse:
Celia:
He’s worsening.
Daniel:
Standard care only.
Twenty minutes later:
Celia:
Standard care is failing.
Then no messages for forty-three minutes.
During that gap, the security video showed Daniel enter the physician consultation room.
No audio followed.
Then Celia went to Liam’s bedside and administered HVP-17.
Daniel claimed he told her not to.
Celia claimed he said:
“If you do it, make sure it works.”
No recording.
No witness.
That part might never be resolved.
Emily wanted to scream.
Hale said:
“We can prove he knew Liam was a candidate. We can prove he knew after it was given. We can prove he helped conceal it.”
“But not whether he ordered it.”
“Correct.”
Emily looked at him.
“Then your first detective told me he helped plan it.”
Hale nodded.
“He helped plan the concealment. We should have been more precise before the full evidence review.”
Emily appreciated the correction.
It also hurt.
Her rage needed careful language now.
Then the board of Carter Biomedical’s successor investment vehicle opened its own investigation into Daniel.
Emails showed his trust had not merely invested.
Daniel personally chaired the investment committee overseeing Halcyon.
He was both father and financier.
A conflict nobody disclosed to Emily.
Then one committee memo appeared.
If HVP neonatal program is suspended permanently, expected valuation impairment 40–60%.
Daniel had read it the day Liam was born.

By the time Liam died, Daniel knew exactly what exposure of the intervention could cost him.
Power.
