Chapter 5 - THE NURSE WHO KEPT A COPY
Hannah Lowe had been Liam’s night nurse.
She remembered everything.
“I should have called you years ago.”
“Why didn’t you?”
“Because I reported it.”
Emily went still.
Two days after Liam died, Hannah filed a safety complaint after noticing a medication-log mismatch and seeing Celia enter Liam’s room after scheduled rounds.
The complaint said:
Check midnight medication record.
The Carter infant was not a simple genetic death.
Hospital risk management reviewed it.
Celia produced corrected notes.
Daniel threatened litigation if the hospital implied experimental treatment had occurred.
The complaint was closed as unsubstantiated.
Hannah did not trust the outcome and copied the relevant security footage before automatic deletion.
“Was that allowed?” Emily asked.
“No.”
“Good.”
Hannah almost laughed through tears.
Then:
“I kept thinking I’d ruined my career for nothing.”
“What changed?”
“Celia called me three months ago.”
Emily froze.
Celia knew Hannah had the video.
“She asked whether I still had it.”
“And?”
“I lied.”
Hannah told Celia it had been destroyed.
Then she contacted an attorney.
The footage went to authorities.
That was the flash drive Hale showed Emily.
“Why didn’t you come to me first?”
“If Daniel knew you had it, I was afraid it would disappear again.”
The explanation still hurt, but Emily understood it.
Hannah had preserved evidence.
She had not used Emily’s life for personal gain.
Still, the pattern hurt.
Then Hannah said:
“There’s one more thing.”
She had saved an image of Liam’s original bedside medication screen.
One entry did not match the final chart.
A coded research identifier appeared at 12:41 a.m.
HVP-17.
Halcyon Pediatric Ventures.
Celia had deleted it later.
That identifier tied the intervention directly to the paused study.
Then Hannah added:
“I heard Daniel arguing with Celia that night.”
“What did he say?”
“I couldn’t hear all of it.”
“What did you hear?”
Hannah paused.
“Emily can never know.”
Emily closed her eyes.
Six years of grief narrowed into one sentence.
Then Hannah said:
“And Celia answered, ‘Then you tell her.’”
