Chapter 8 - THE SETTLEMENT THEY WANTED SEALED
Solmere and related insurers offered Emily a civil settlement worth more than $15 million.
Rachel read every page.
Then stopped at confidentiality.
The settlement required Emily to keep nonpublic medical and corporate records sealed except where law required disclosure.
Emily pushed the papers away.
“No.”
Rachel nodded.
“I thought so.”
The hospital argued confidentiality protected other patients and proprietary information.
Some of that was legitimate.
Emily proposed redaction instead.
Protect patient identities and unrelated trade secrets.
Do not seal Liam’s corrected medical history.
Negotiations stalled.
Daniel’s lawyers called Emily vindictive.
They said she wanted public humiliation more than compensation.
That accusation hurt because part of her did want him humiliated.
She admitted it to Rachel.
“Does that make me wrong?”
“No. It makes motive complicated.”
Emily laughed bitterly.
Apparently everything was complicated now.
Then prosecutors made their first charging decisions.
Celia faced charges tied to unauthorized clinical intervention, falsification, obstruction, and conspiracy.
Daniel faced conspiracy, obstruction, false statements, and evidence-related charges.
No homicide charge yet.
Emily felt cheated.
Hale did not apologize.
“We are not going to use your grief to overcharge a case.”
She stared at him.
Then slowly nodded.
That sentence was brutal.
Also respectful.
Then Celia entered a cooperation agreement.
She would testify against Daniel.
In exchange, prosecutors would consider her assistance at sentencing.
Emily hated that too.
Celia’s cancer did not erase responsibility.
Her cooperation did not either.
Then Daniel made his counterattack.
He filed evidence that Celia had once threatened him.
Message:
If Halcyon cuts me loose, I tell Emily everything.
Daniel replied:
You’re insane.
Celia:
Maybe. But you’re exposed too.
Blackmail.
Real.
Daniel had been trapped by someone he had helped protect.
That did not make him innocent.
It made the alliance clearer.
Then Hale called Emily late that evening.
“We found the original audio.”
“The one where Daniel says I’ll blame myself?”
“Yes.”
“Was Celia’s copy edited?”
A pause.
“Not exactly.”
Emily’s stomach tightened.
“What does that mean?”

“There are thirty-seven seconds before the clip you heard.”
And those thirty-seven seconds changed the emotional meaning of the conversation without changing Daniel’s guilt.
