Three weeks later, Claire called after midnight.
“The card was used.”
Lena sat upright.
“The woman?”
“I can’t give details.”
“Is she safe?”
“For tonight.”
Lena closed her eyes.
Sometimes one safe night was everything.
The next morning, Lena asked to volunteer with Blackline.
Claire warned her:
“You are not required to turn pain into service.”
“I know.”
“Good.”
“I still want to.”
Training taught Lena the hardest rule:
