Chapter 4 - THE HOUSE HE SAID WAS HERS
Lena left the hospital two days later with a cast, pain medication, and
nowhere Ethan knew.
Blackline placed her in a furnished apartment owned by a nonprofit
partner.
Claire came the next morning with a laptop.
“We need to discuss money.”
Lena laughed bitterly.
“Ethan already did.”
Claire opened a file.
“What do you own separately?”
“My father left me a commercial building in Erie and an investment
trust.”
“Approximate value?”
“About four million.”
“Who manages it?”
Lena went quiet.
Claire already knew.
“Ethan.”
“Through what authority?”
“I signed management documents after Dad died.”
“Do you have copies?”
“No.”
Claire nodded.
“Then we get them.”
Claire turned one page.
“There’s a proposed amendment.”
Lena stared.
Dated three weeks earlier.
It expanded Ethan’s authority to collateralize the commercial building
for “joint marital investment purposes.”
Her electronic signature appeared at the bottom.
Lena’s stomach dropped.
“I never signed this.”
Claire looked at the metadata.
“Not executed yet.”
“Then why is my signature there?”
“Draft signature block. Could be template. Could be worse.”
Lena closed her eyes.
“Ethan told me last month we were doing estate planning.”
Claire looked at her.
“Did you sign anything?”
“Several things.”
There it was.
That evening, Ethan called from an unknown number.
Lena almost answered.
Claire said, “Your choice.”
Lena let it ring.
A voicemail arrived.
“Lena, I know you’re scared. I am too. I never meant to hurt you. You
fell while I was holding you. Please stop letting strangers turn this
into something it isn’t.”
Lena listened twice.
Then he said:
“You know what happens if you keep doing this. Everything gets ugly.”
Lena deleted nothing.
Claire saved the voicemail.
The next morning, Ethan filed.
Emergency petition.
He claimed Lena had abandoned the marital home after a mutual
altercation.
He claimed she had a history of anxiety.
He requested temporary control of joint finances “to preserve household
stability.”
And at the bottom:
Petitioner has reason to believe Respondent is being manipulated by
outside parties.
Claire read the line.
“He means us.”
Lena looked at her cast.
“No.”
She looked at the petition.
“He means anyone I listen to instead of him.”
Then Claire found another attachment.
A therapist invoice history.
Three years.
Ethan had copies.
Lena had never given them to him.
Someone had been collecting her private medical information.
