Chapter 5 - THE FILE WITH HER NAME ON IT
The competency file contained no diagnosis.
That was important.
It contained pieces.
Therapy bills. Prescription receipts. Messages Lena sent Ethan after
fights.
I’m sorry I overreacted.
I’m sorry I made everything worse.
Please come home.
Ethan had saved them.
Claire read quietly.
“These will hurt.”
Lena looked away.
“They’re true.”
“That’s why.”
Lena’s eyes filled.
“I did apologize.”
“Of course you did.”
“Don’t do that.”
Claire looked up.
“Do what?”
“Make everything I did part of some abuse script. Sometimes I was awful
too.”
Claire nodded.
“Okay.”
Claire continued.
“Were you ever cruel?”
“Yes.”
“Did you yell?”
“Yes.”
“Throw anything?”
“A glass once.”
“Hit him?”
“I shoved him twice.”
“Good.”
Lena stared.
Claire clarified.
“Good that you’re telling me. Your case does not require you to be
perfect.”
Lena’s throat tightened.
That sentence did more for her than reassurance.
Ethan’s lawyers were building a clean story.
Lena did not have one.
She had a real one.
Claire introduced her to Daniel Mercer, Blackline’s security
investigator.
He was fifty, gray-haired, quiet.
He asked for access to Lena’s phone backups.
Within hours, he found repeated password changes tied to Ethan’s
devices.
After major arguments, Lena’s bank login changed.
Her garage code changed twice.
Her location sharing was turned on remotely.
Daniel looked at her.
“Did you know he could track you?”
“No.”
“Did you know he had administrator access to the smart home?”
“Yes.”
“Did he ever lock you out?”
Lena hesitated.
“Three times.”
“Why?”
“He said I left without telling him.”
Daniel wrote it down.
“Dates?”
She remembered two.
He pulled door logs.
There they were.
11:42 p.m. Exterior access revoked.
1:17 a.m. Restored.
Another:
9:06 p.m. User LENA disabled.
The third:
12:31 a.m. Remote deadbolt refusal.
Lena stared.
“He said the system malfunctioned.”
Daniel looked at her.
“It didn’t.”
The door logs were evidence.
So were the password changes.
So were deleted security clips restored from cloud cache.
One showed Ethan blocking Lena from entering a room while she asked for
her phone.
No hitting.
No dramatic violence.
Control.
Pattern.
Then Daniel found something else.
Three years earlier, a woman named Rebecca Shaw had administrator access
to Ethan’s office suite.
Former executive assistant.
Access terminated suddenly.
HR file sealed.
Settlement payment: $180,000.
Reason: Confidential personnel resolution.
Claire recognized the name.
“She called Blackline once.”
Lena stared.
“What?”
“Before I met you.”
“What happened?”
“She never followed through.”
“Why?”
Claire looked at the sealed file.
“Maybe now we find out.”
