Chapter 15 - THE NUMBER SOMEONE ANSWERED

One year after Lena’s bathroom call, she sat in the Blackline office

during an evening volunteer shift.

Rain tapped the windows.

At 10:46 p.m., the emergency line rang.

Unknown number.

For one second Lena was back on the bathroom floor.

Black card.

Breaking door.

No one is coming to save you.

Then she remembered what actually happened.

Someone answered.

Lena picked up.

“Blackline emergency. Are you safe enough to speak?”

Silence.

Breathing.

Then a woman whispered:

“I don’t know.”

“That’s okay.”

The woman began crying.

“My husband is downstairs.”

“Are you hurt?”

“No.”

“Do you want help leaving tonight, or do you want someone to stay on the

phone while you think?”

A pause.

“Can you stay?”

“Yes.”

So Lena stayed.

Forty minutes later, the woman chose to leave through a neighbor’s

house. Blackline arranged transport and police assistance at her

request.

When the call ended, Claire entered.

“You okay?”

Lena smiled through tears.

“Yes.”

This time the answer was true.

Her life was not magically perfect. Ethan remained part of a past she

sometimes missed and never wanted back. Marcus’s case continued. Brooks

Development changed because people had finally been forced to see the

pattern.

Lena rebuilt her design business and moved into an apartment with bright

east-facing windows.

One Sunday she found the original black card in an old purse.

Its edges were worn.

She framed it and placed it inside her desk drawer.

Not on display.

Some victories did not need visitors.

Then she picked up a fresh stack of cards for her Blackline shift.

Somewhere, another woman might be telling herself:

Not yet.

Not bad enough.

Not tonight.

Lena knew better than to choose for her.

She only knew that if the moment came, the number would answer.

And this time, Lena Brooks might be the voice on the other end.
