Chapter 7 - THE OFFER TO STAY QUIET

The offer was two million dollars.

Lena read it twice.

Ethan would pay temporary support. Cover medical bills. Allow Lena to

keep the Erie property. Agree to divorce mediation.

In exchange:

No public allegations. No company testimony. No contact with current or

former Brooks Development employees regarding “unverified personal

grievances.”

Rebecca.

They wanted Lena separated from Rebecca.

Claire leaned back.

“They’re afraid of aggregation.”

Lena thought of Marcus’s email.

Pattern complaints must be separated.

“How much would I get in divorce without this?”

“Possibly more.”

“So the money is for silence.”

“Yes.”

Lena looked at the settlement.

Six months earlier, two million would have felt impossible.

Now it felt cheap.

“No.”

Claire nodded.

“No counter?”

“No.”

Ethan responded by escalating.

His lawyers submitted edited audio.

Lena shouting:

“I hate you.”

Another:

“I swear I’ll ruin everything.”

Another:

“Sometimes I wish you’d disappear.”

All real.

All recorded during arguments.

The court scheduled a protective-order hearing.

Claire warned her.

“He will look calm.”

“He always does.”

“He will say you were mutually toxic.”

“We were.”

“Lena.”

“No.”

She looked at Claire.

“I need to say it correctly. I fought. I screamed. I said awful things.”

“Yes.”

“And he broke my arm.”

“Yes.”

“Both.”

“Yes.”

That was how they prepared.

At the hearing, Ethan testified first.

Dark suit. White shirt. No visible anger.

“I love my wife.”

Lena almost laughed.

He continued.

“Our marriage became volatile after her father died. Lena struggled with

anxiety. I handled finances because she asked me to. That night she was

upset about money and attacked me.”

His lawyer showed the scratch.

Ethan said he grabbed her arm to stop her from hitting him again.

“She pulled away.”

The fracture was accidental.

Plausible.

Then he played Lena’s recordings.

Then Claire cross-examined.

“Mr. Brooks, did you change your wife’s banking password six times in

eighteen months?”

“For security.”

“Always within twenty-four hours of arguments?”

“I don’t remember.”

“Did you disable her home access?”

“System errors.”

Claire showed logs.

Manual remote command: ETHAN ADMIN.

His expression changed slightly.

“Did you tell her the locks malfunctioned?”

“I may have misunderstood the system.”

“You own a construction company that installed the system.”

Objection.

Sustained.

Still landed.

Then Claire played Ethan’s voicemail from after the assault:

You know what happens if you keep doing this.

“What did you mean?”

“Divorce gets ugly.”

“Not that nobody would believe her?”

“No.”

Claire nodded.

Then she called Rebecca Shaw.

Marcus stood immediately.

His face changed.

For the first time, the men had not controlled who entered the story.

Rebecca took the oath.

And Ethan stopped looking calm.
