Chapter 10 - MARK'S DEFENSE
Mark did not collapse.
He fought.
His defense had several layers.
First:
The home dinners were legitimate business development.
True.
Second:
Claire voluntarily hosted them for years.
Mostly true.
Third:
Household wealth from Mark’s company benefited Claire.
True in a broad sense.
Fourth:
Mercer Administrative Holdings paid many household expenses.
True.
Fifth:
The company reimbursement amounts were intended to compensate total hosting costs, not Claire personally.
Possible in some cases.
Then Lauren Pierce made the strongest point.
“There is no employment contract promising Claire wages.”
Grace agreed.
Claire felt angry.
Then Grace continued:
“But the issue is not simply unpaid household work. It is whether Mark represented to the company that specific services and staffing costs existed, obtained reimbursement, and directed money to an entity he controlled.”
That was different.
Mark also denied choking Claire.
He called the kitchen incident:
a brief physical argument.
Claire had photographs of neck redness.
No serious injury.
Linda admitted Mark grabbed Claire but said Claire “was screaming and waving a knife later.”
That sounded bad.
Claire had indeed held the knife.
At a distance.
After being grabbed.
Then put it down.
Kitchen security cameras did not exist.
The scene depended on testimony.
Rachel had received a voice message from Claire minutes afterward.
Claire was crying:
“He grabbed my throat. I picked up a knife because I thought he’d come at me again. I didn’t touch him.”
Contemporaneous.
Useful.
Not perfect.
Mark’s defense was not absurd.
That made Claire more careful.
She no longer wanted the biggest accusation.
She wanted the version that could survive scrutiny.
Then Mark produced one document she had never seen.
A postnuptial agreement draft.
Unsigned.
It contained a clause stating:
Spouse acknowledges household-hosting contributions are voluntary and uncompensated.
Claire stared.
“Why does this exist?”
Mark said nothing.
