Chapter 5 - LINDA KNEW
Linda called Claire twelve times in three days.
Claire answered none.
Then Linda texted:
You are humiliating Mark over bookkeeping you don’t understand.
Claire saved it.
Grace asked:
“Why would she know this is about bookkeeping?”
Claire had not told Linda.
Only Mark.
Claire replied:
What bookkeeping?
Linda did not answer.
Then Rachel noticed something.
At many dinners, Linda had brought printed seating cards.
Menus.
Guest lists.
Claire assumed she was helping.
She searched old photos.
One showed Linda holding a folder labeled:
CLIENT HOSTING.
Another showed a stack of invoices beside her.
Claire zoomed in.
MERCER HOME CULINARY SERVICES.
Linda knew.
Claire finally called her.
Grace recorded with consent where lawful through counsel protocol.
Claire asked:
“What is Mercer Home Culinary Services?”
Linda sighed.
“Oh, please.”
“Answer me.”
“It’s just how Mark accounts for the dinners.”
“Why is my name on it?”
“Because you do the cooking.”
“Where does the money go?”
Linda paused.
Then:
“Into the family.”
Claire’s chest tightened.
“What family?”
“Your household.”
“No. It goes to Mark’s holding company.”
Linda snapped:
“You benefit from that company.”
“How?”
“You live in that house.”
Claire went silent.
Linda continued:
“Do you think groceries, vacations, cars, all of that appears from nowhere?”
Claire said:
“So my labor was payment for living there?”
“You were his wife.”
There it was.
Not a secret conspiracy.
A belief.
Claire’s work belonged to Mark because marriage made it available.
Then Linda added:
“And frankly, those dinners helped build the company that supports you.”
Claire asked:
“Did you ever tell clients I was being paid?”
Linda laughed.
“Everyone assumed you were.”
Claire’s heart dropped.
The humiliation was larger than private marriage.
