Chapter 12 - LINDA'S BIRTHDAY BUSINESS

Linda’s birthday dinner had another secret.

It was not really a family birthday dinner.

Eleven of the invited guests were:

clients,

prospective clients,

or referral partners.

Only six were relatives.

The “birthday” framing allowed Mark to pressure Claire emotionally.

Don’t ruin Mom’s birthday.

But company calendar notes called it:

Q3 RELATIONSHIP DINNER.

Mark planned business conversations around the table.

Linda knew.

She liked hosting wealthy people.

She enjoyed being treated as family matriarch.

Claire’s cooking supported that identity too.

One guest, Peter Lawson, remembered Linda saying:

“Claire does all this for Mark’s business. She’s lucky she gets to be useful.”

Claire closed her eyes when she heard.

Useful.

Again.

The word.

Then another guest remembered Mark joking:

“The best caterer in town and I don’t even have to pay her.”

Everyone laughed.

Claire had been carrying dessert into the room.

She laughed too.

Now Peter said:

“I thought it was a joke because I assumed the company compensated the household.”

It did.

Just not Claire.

Then Linda’s own bank records entered discovery for another reason.

She had received monthly transfers from Mercer Administrative Holdings labeled:

family hosting support.

Total over five years:

$42,000.

Why?

Linda said she bought:

decorations,

wine,

gifts,

and linens.

Some receipts existed.

Not all.

Claire stared.

Mark had paid his mother for “support.”

Paid himself through the holding company.

Paid temporary staff when they existed.

But the person cooking, planning, serving, and cleaning most often—

received nothing directly.

Then one transfer stood out.

$7,500.

Date:

the day after Claire’s fiftieth birthday dinner.

Memo:

L.M. EVENT OVERSIGHT.

Linda had been paid more for supervising Claire than Claire was ever paid for doing the work.
