Chapter 6 - THE INTRODUCTIONS
Claire remembered the introductions now.
“This is Claire. She handles all our home events.”
“This dinner is her thing.”
“She’s incredible at hospitality.”
Clients complimented her.
One executive once asked for her card.
Mark laughed.
“She doesn’t need one. She only works for me.”
Everyone laughed.
Claire did too.
Now the line felt different.
Grace contacted several former employees through proper discovery.
One remembered Mark saying:
“Claire runs the hosting side.”
Another:
“She invoices through our admin entity.”
Another employee believed Claire chose not to be publicly involved because she “liked staying behind the scenes.”
Claire had never chosen that.
Then former office manager Paula Grant produced an old email.
PAULA:
Need Claire’s W-9 or service agreement for audit file.
MARK:
Not necessary. Spousal entity. I own the payment vehicle.
PAULA:
But Claire is listed as service provider.
MARK:
Household arrangement. Cleared.
Cleared by whom?
No legal memo attached.
No board approval.
Then Paula wrote:
If she is unpaid, should we remove labor line and reimburse only actual food costs?
Mark replied:
No. Keep current format.
Claire stared.
That was harder to explain.
He had been told the labor line was misleading.
He chose to keep it.
Then Paula revealed why she remembered.
Six months later, Mark fired her.
Official reason:
performance.
Paula always believed it happened because she kept asking questions about expense documentation.
Could she prove retaliation?
Not yet.
But she still had one forwarded email Mark thought she deleted.
