Rachel reviewed Emily’s old marital documents.
One stood out.
A spousal acknowledgment signed two weeks before the wedding.
Emily remembered.
Victor said it was standard.
It acknowledged:
Carter family assets remained separate.
Normal.
Then one schedule referenced:
legacy founder obligations and contingent instruments.
Emily had signed without seeing underlying documents.
Was that fraud?
Not necessarily.
Disclosure was vague.
But Emily had counsel.
Her lawyer then was a friend recommended by Lorraine.
Problem.
Conflict?
Potentially.
The attorney had done prior work for Carter family affiliates.
That had not been clearly disclosed.
Rachel frowned.
“Now I’m interested.”
Emily asked:
“Can we undo the prenup?”
“Maybe parts. Maybe not.”
Again:
no magic.
Then Rachel found billing records.
Lorraine’s family office paid the lawyer’s invoice.
Emily stared.
“I thought Victor paid.”
“He did indirectly.”
