Chapter 11 - FATHER, NOT HUSBAND
Claire allowed Ethan to receive medical updates.
Then one ultrasound appointment.
He sat on the opposite side of the room.
When the heartbeat sounded, he cried.
Claire did too.
For one minute they were not:
betrayed wife,
unfaithful husband,
fired executive.
They were two people hearing their child.
Then the appointment ended.
Outside, Ethan said:
“Can I touch your stomach?”
“No.”
He nodded.
No argument.
That mattered.
Then he said:
“I don’t know how to be your ex and his father.”
Claire answered:
“Learn.”
The baby was a boy.
Claire did not tell her brothers the name because she had not chosen one.
Mason immediately suggested Hale.
“No.”
“Middle name?”
“No.”
He pretended to be wounded.
Claire laughed for the first time in days.
Then Ethan entered therapy voluntarily.
Not as a condition of reconciliation.
There would be none.
He admitted the affair began during a period when he felt invisible beside Claire’s family.
At Hale gatherings, he felt like:
Claire’s husband,
Mason’s brother-in-law,
the executive from the smaller company.
Vanessa admired him directly.
Needed his judgment.
Saw his status.
That fed him.
Claire listened during one co-parent counseling session.
Then said:
“So you betrayed me because my brothers made you insecure?”
“No.”
Ethan shook his head.
“I betrayed you because I used insecurity as permission.”
Better.
Then he admitted something harder.
He liked that Vanessa did not know exactly who Claire was.
With Vanessa, he could present himself as the powerful one.
