Chapter 12 - THE DIVORCE
The divorce was quieter than the gala.
No dramatic courtroom.
No secret fortune.
Claire and Ethan had:
a condo,
retirement accounts,
savings,
two cars.
They negotiated.
Claire did not demand punitive terms for adultery beyond what law allowed.
Ethan did not ask for Hale family money.
It was not marital property.
The unborn child complicated future support, but not in a sensational way.
Parenting plans would develop after birth.
Then Vanessa attempted to contact Ethan again.
He told Claire during co-parent counseling.
“She wants to talk.”
“Do you?”
“No.”
“Then don’t.”
He looked surprised.
Claire continued:
“I am not your morality supervisor anymore.”
That sentence freed both of them.
Then Vanessa’s company challenged one Hale re-bid decision.
Ryan recused himself from advising the property team because of family conflict.
Independent counsel handled it.
Grant won one smaller contract back.
Mason exploded.
Claire laughed.
“Good.”
“Good?”
“If she won fairly, good.”
Mason stared.
“You are infuriating.”
“No. I just don’t want Hale power used like a weapon.”
That was important.
Vanessa had humiliated Claire publicly.
Claire could have destroyed her business through family influence.
She refused.
Revenge would not become corruption in the opposite direction.
Then Vanessa sent Claire one final email.
Not apology.
Explanation.
I thought winning him meant I was better than you.
Claire read it.
Then:
At the gala I realized I had been competing with someone who wasn’t competing.
That sentence landed.
Vanessa continued:
I’m sorry for the way I spoke to you.
Claire did not answer.
