Chapter 9 - THE BROTHERS

The Hale brothers were furious in different ways.

Mason wanted every Hale property to stop doing business with Ethan’s company.

Ryan said no.

“You punish an entire company for one executive’s misconduct and we become the problem.”

Mason hated that.

Claire agreed with Ryan.

The contracts had to be reviewed independently.

Not weaponized.

Luke cared least about business.

He asked Claire:

“Are you eating?”

She laughed.

Then cried.

That was why she needed all three.

Mason represented protection.

Ryan restraint.

Luke ordinary care.

Then Claire learned Mason had called Ethan the morning after the gala.

“What did you say?”

Mason admitted:

“I told him if he came near you, I’d break his jaw.”

Claire stared.

“Mason.”

“I was angry.”

“You cannot threaten my child’s father.”

The phrase stopped everyone.

First time she said it aloud.

My child’s father.

Not husband.

Not enemy.

A role that would survive divorce if pregnancy continued normally.

Mason apologized.

Then Claire told all three:

“I need brothers, not soldiers.”

Ryan smiled.

Luke nodded.

Mason looked miserable.

But accepted it.

That mattered.

Family power could become coercion too, even when used in Claire’s defense.

Then Ryan found something unexpected in the Hale contract review.

Ethan had once rejected Grant Event Strategies from a Hale event.

Eight months into the affair.

Reason:

pricing too high.

Vanessa was furious in messages.

“You embarrassed me.”

Ethan replied:

“I can’t hand you everything.”

This evidence complicated the narrative.

Ethan had favored Vanessa sometimes.

But not universally.

The compliance case would depend on undisclosed conflict and specific decisions, not a cartoon pattern of every contract being corrupt.

Then Mason said:

“I hate evidence.”

May you like

Ryan smiled.

“No. You hate nuance.”
