The first Grant invoice was legitimate on its face.
Decor.
Staffing.
Coordination.
Audio support.
Nothing absurd.
The event happened.
Vanessa’s team worked.
The price was within market range.
Claire almost felt disappointed.
A clean villain would have been easier.
Then Ryan found something.
The vendor-selection scoring sheet.
Grant Event Strategies ranked second.
Another company ranked first.
What changed?
A handwritten executive note:
CLIENT-FACING FIT — RECONSIDER.
Initials:
E.C.
Ethan Cole.
The procurement team rescored presentation and responsiveness.
Grant won by three points.
Could an executive legitimately influence vendor selection?
Sometimes.
Did he disclose a personal relationship?
No.
Ethan insisted the affair had not become physical until later.
Claire stared at him during their first lawyer-mediated conversation.
“Vanessa said eleven months.”
“Yes.”
“The vendor recommendation was nine months ago.”
“Yes.”
“You were already sleeping with her.”
“Yes.”
“Then why say it became physical later?”
Ethan looked down.
“I meant emotionally.”
Claire almost smiled.
He had become so practiced at dividing truth into useful pieces he no longer heard himself.
Then company travel records showed Ethan and Vanessa attended three out-of-state events together.
Their rooms were billed separately.
No fake expenses.
But on two trips, Ethan extended his stay one night.
Personal expense?
He reimbursed the room afterward.
Properly.
Again, not fraud.
Then why did it matter?
Because he told Claire those trips were mandatory client overnights.
He used work as cover.
The company might have been financially unharmed.
The marriage was not.
Then Claire asked Ryan:
“Is this enough to destroy his career?”
Ryan shook his head.
“Not automatically.”
She appreciated the answer.
An affair with a vendor created conflict-of-interest risk.
Failure to disclose could lead to discipline.
But actual outcome depended on policy, influence, and evidence.
Claire did not want invented crimes.
Then the next record arrived.
A $68,000 event-change order.
Approved solely by Ethan.
