Chapter 1 - I'M NOT YOUR REAL SISTER

Marisa Carter had Elena by the hair before Daniel reached the kitchen.
She slammed Elena against the wall.
Once.
Then again.
Elena cried out and brought one hand up to protect her forehead.
A red mark appeared near her hairline.
No blood.
No serious injury.
But the force was enough to make her knees shake.
“You stole him!”
Marisa’s voice broke into a scream.
Elena shoved hard at her shoulders.
“I STOLE NO ONE!”
Marisa pinned her again.
“He only sees you!”
The luxury kitchen seemed too bright.
Too clean.
Too ordinary for what was happening.
A glass bowl sat on the island.
A pot simmered on the stove.
The refrigerator hummed.
And Marisa Carter, twenty-nine years old, was pressing her sister-in-law against a wall like the world had narrowed to one person she needed to punish.
Daniel rushed in from the connected hallway.
“ENOUGH!”
He grabbed Marisa’s wrist and tore her away.
Elena stumbled sideways and caught the edge of the marble counter.
Daniel stepped between them.
“What is wrong with you?”
Marisa started crying.
Not frightened crying.
Furious crying.
She pointed past him at Elena.
“She took you!”
Daniel stared at his younger sister.
“That’s sick.”
Marisa shook her head violently.
“You don’t understand!”
She lunged forward and grabbed his sleeve.
“I LOVE YOU!”
Daniel jerked away as if the words themselves had burned him.
“Marisa, stop.”
“Just listen!”
Elena stared at both of them.
For the first time, fear was replaced by something colder.
Confusion.
Marisa looked directly into Daniel’s eyes.
Her voice dropped.
“I’m not your real sister.”
Daniel went completely still.
“What the hell?”
Marisa opened her mouth.
Then Elena noticed something on her face.
Not shame.
Not terror.
Triumph.
As though Marisa believed she had finally said the one sentence that would rearrange reality into something acceptable.
Daniel looked at her.
“What does that mean?”
Marisa reached into the pocket of her fitted green dress.
Her hands shook.
Then she pulled out a folded photocopy.
She held it between them.
“Mom and Dad lied to you.”
Daniel took the paper.
His eyes moved across the heading.
FINAL DECREE OF ADOPTION.
Twenty-seven years earlier.
Child: Marisa Wells.
Adoptive parents: Susan Carter and Robert Carter.
Daniel stared.
Elena saw the color leave his face.
Marisa whispered:
“I’m not your blood.”
Daniel lifted his eyes.
“And you think that changes what you just did?”
Marisa’s expression cracked.
“You don’t understand.”
“No,” Daniel said. “I understand exactly what I saw.”
He pointed toward Elena.
“You attacked my wife.”
Then toward the paper.
“And now you’re telling me you think this makes your obsession acceptable.”
Marisa burst into tears.
“You always choose her.”
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“She is my wife.”
“And I was there first.”
There it was.
Not love.
Not yet.
Ownership.
Elena leaned against the counter, breathing hard.
Her scalp hurt where Marisa had pulled it.
Her forehead throbbed.
Then Daniel turned to her.
“Are you okay?”
Elena looked at him.
“I don’t know.”
That answer landed harder than yes or no.
Daniel reached for his phone.
Marisa stepped backward.
“What are you doing?”
“Calling the police.”
Her face changed.
“Daniel—”
“No.”
“I’m your sister.”
Daniel looked at the adoption decree again.
Then at her.
“Yes.”
Marisa froze.
“Yes, you are.”
Her mouth opened.
Daniel continued:
May you like
“And being adopted does not give you the right to put your hands on Elena.”
For the first time since the attack began, Marisa had no answer.
