Chapter 12 - THE ASSAULT CASE
Marisa’s criminal case remained proportional.
No serious injury.
No weapon.
No prior record.
But repeated hair pulling and wall impacts were documented.
She accepted a negotiated resolution involving:
probation,
anger intervention,
continued no-contact boundaries,
and compliance with treatment.
No extreme prison fantasy.
At sentencing she apologized to Elena.
“I thought you were taking something from me.”
Elena answered:
“I wasn’t.”
Marisa nodded.
“I know.”
Then:
“I made you responsible for a loss that was happening inside me.”
Better.
Elena did not forgive publicly.
She simply said:
“I don’t want contact.”
The court respected the boundary.
Daniel did too.
Afterward, Susan asked Daniel:
“Do you think Elena will ever forgive her?”
Daniel answered:
“That’s not the goal.”
Susan looked surprised.
“What is?”
“For Elena to feel safe.”
That was the shift.
The family had spent years prioritizing restoration of closeness.
Now Daniel understood that sometimes the ethical outcome is distance.
Not permanent hatred.
Not revenge.
Distance.
Marisa complied.
No messages through cousins.
No birthday gifts sent secretly.
No “accidental” encounters.
