Chapter 14 - MARISA BUILDS A LIFE OUTSIDE DANIEL

Two years passed.

Marisa moved to Seattle.

Not exile.

A job.

She worked in commercial interior design.

Joined a grief-and-adoption support group.

Started dating no one for a while.

Then eventually a woman named Claire asked her to dinner.

Marisa said no.

Then yes a month later.

Not because changing orientation solved anything.

It did not.

The point was that Marisa slowly built relationships that did not organize themselves around Daniel.

Friends.

Coworkers.

Allison, her biological half-sister.

Susan.

Therapist.

A life with more than one center.

Daniel remained no-contact except for major family medical updates.

Marisa accepted that.

Acceptance hurt.

Still necessary.

Her move also forced her to confront ordinary loneliness.

In Seattle, nobody knew Daniel.

Nobody cared about Carter family history.

At first that felt like erasure.

Then freedom.

When she had a bad day, she could not call Daniel automatically.

She had to build another habit.

Call a friend.

Walk.

Journal.

Therapy.

Ask a coworker for coffee.

Small substitutions eventually became a life.

That mattered because obsession had thrived partly on convenience.

Daniel had always been the emotional emergency number.

Recovery required more than promising not to call him.

It required creating other places for emotion to go.

Then Marisa had a difficult evening after a breakup with Claire.

Her first instinct was:

Call Daniel.

She stared at the phone.

Did not.

Called Allison instead.

Allison answered:

“You okay?”

“No.”

“Want advice?”

“No.”

“Want company?”

“Yes.”

They stayed on the phone for an hour.

The next morning Marisa cried for a different reason.

Not because the breakup disappeared.

Because for the first time distress had moved somewhere besides Daniel.

That was freedom.

Small.

Real.
