Chapter 11 - ELENA'S ANGER

Elena did not become compassionate immediately.

She was furious.

Marisa had attacked her.

Then turned the family into a debate about Marisa’s pain.

Elena said in counseling:

“Everyone keeps asking why she did it.”

Daniel nodded.

“And?”

“I want someone to ask what it was like to have her hands in my hair.”

Silence.

That mattered.

Understanding motive can accidentally move the victim out of the center.

Daniel apologized.

“I did that.”

“Yes.”

“I was shocked by the adoption.”

“And I was still the one against the wall.”

He looked down.

“You’re right.”

Then Elena said:

“I don’t care whether she thought she loved you.”

Daniel looked up.

“I care that she decided her feelings gave her permission to punish me.”

That became the line they kept.

Feelings explain.

They do not authorize.

Elena also resented Susan.

Not because Susan caused the assault.

Because Susan immediately wanted family therapy.

All together.

Elena said no.

Susan cried.

“I just want us to heal.”

Elena answered:

“You want us in one room because that makes the family look whole.”

Susan went silent.

Elena continued:

“I don’t need to sit across from someone who attacked me to prove I’m interested in healing.”

That became another boundary.

No forced reconciliation.

No family dinner designed to create closure.

Elena’s recovery was ordinary.

She slept badly for weeks.

Startled when someone approached from behind.

Got angry when Daniel’s phone rang late because she assumed Marisa somehow found a way around the order.

Then the symptoms eased.

Not because Marisa apologized.

Because safety became consistent.

Locks.

No surprise visits.

No message carrying.

No relative saying:

“She’s hurting too.”

Elena did not need the family to hate Marisa.

She needed them to stop asking her to absorb Marisa’s pain.
