Chapter 10 - THE VIOLENCE
Ethan’s slap in the hallway changed the legal situation.
Claire photographed the redness.
Called police.
Not because she thought one slap made Ethan a violent stranger.
Because he had escalated from hidden manipulation to physical intimidation to protect the archive.
Ethan did not resist when officers arrived.
He admitted:
“I slapped her.”
Why?
“I panicked.”
The locked room was secured.
Claire’s attorney Grace Bennett arranged independent imaging of the files.
No one let Ethan remove anything.
A temporary protective order restricted him from entering the house without arrangement.
Ethan moved to a hotel.
Claire stayed elsewhere anyway.
The house no longer felt like hers.
The assault charge was simple compared with the archive.
Ethan tried to minimize it once.
“I slapped you one time.”
Claire stared.
He immediately heard himself.
“One time is one time too many.”
Grace later explained that the hallway assault mattered beyond injury severity because of purpose.
Ethan used physical force to prevent Claire from accessing information inside their jointly owned home.
That context supported:
intimidation,
coercive-control arguments in family court,
and protective-order relief.
It did not transform the slap into attempted murder.
