Chapter 7 - THE FRIEND WHO DISAPPEARED

Claire’s closest friend in 2018 had been Rachel Kim.

Rachel moved to Chicago abruptly.

The friendship faded after a fight.

Claire always believed Rachel had betrayed her confidence.

Inside the room was a printed email exchange between Ethan and a man named Martin Shaw.

SHAW:

Friend is resistant to subject’s new relationship pattern.

ETHAN:

Can we reduce contact without direct confrontation?

Claire read it three times.

“What did you do to Rachel?”

Ethan said:

“Nothing illegal.”

Claire almost screamed.

“What did you do?”

Martin Shaw had sent Rachel anonymous screenshots suggesting Claire had mocked her behind her back.

The screenshots were manipulated composites.

Not technologically sophisticated.

Just edited message fragments.

Rachel confronted Claire.

Claire denied it.

Rachel believed Claire was lying.

The friendship cracked.

Rachel remembered the screenshots immediately.

She had kept them.

Not because she was waiting for vindication.

Because the fight had changed her life.

The screenshots appeared to show Claire writing:

Rachel always needs rescuing.

and:

If Chicago takes her, honestly, good.

Claire had never written either sentence.

Martin’s file contained source fragments from real messages:

Rachel always…

Chicago…

honestly…

good.

He had recombined them.

Simple.

Crude.

Effective because the tone sounded like Claire on a bad day.

Rachel said:

“I hated you for sounding exactly like yourself.”

Claire cried harder.

That was the sophistication of the manipulation.

Not technological brilliance.

Familiarity.

Ethan had studied how Claire wrote well enough to make a false version feel plausible to someone who loved her.

Months later Rachel accepted a job in Chicago.

Claire had never known someone else pushed the fracture.

Claire called Rachel that night.

Rachel answered on the third ring.

Claire said:

May you like

“I found something.”

Then started crying before she could explain.
