Chapter 8 - THE APARTMENT

Claire and Ethan’s first apartment together had felt like another happy accident.

Her lease was ending.

His building had a vacant two-bedroom.

Convenient.

Cheap for the neighborhood.

Inside the archive was a property-management memo.

Vacancy hold requested by Ethan Morgan.

Unit:

8C.

Hold date:

six weeks before Claire mentioned her lease problem.

Ethan had kept the unit empty.

He had also instructed the leasing manager to waive:

application fees,

pet deposit,

and first month parking.

Claire thought the building manager liked them.

No.

Ethan had arranged it.

The apartment file also included building-camera access reports.

Ethan had no hidden camera inside the unit.

That mattered enormously to Claire.

For two days she feared every bedroom, bathroom, and kitchen memory might have been recorded.

Police found no evidence of interior surveillance.

The building system recorded:

entry fobs,

garage access,

common-area cameras.

Ethan had reviewed Claire’s entry times more often than necessary because his job gave him administrative access.

He told himself he was checking whether she arrived safely.

Sometimes he texted:

Home?

seconds before Claire planned to message him.

She once thought it was romantic intuition.

It was data.

No secret cameras.

Still a violation.

Relief and disgust arrived together.

Again:

not every act harmed her.

Some made her life easier.

That was the trap.

Control can feel like care when it reliably removes friction.

Claire asked:

“Was anything spontaneous?”

Ethan looked at her.

“Yes.”

May you like

“Name one thing.”

He could not.
