Chapter 13 - THE SHED CAME DOWN

Lorraine sold the house to a young couple.

The shed remained.

Until inspection found rot in the rear wall and termite damage.

The new owners asked permission to demolish.

They did not need Claire’s permission legally.

They had heard the story from neighbors and felt strange about it.

Claire said:

“Take it down.”

Daniel came with her the day before demolition.

Not for ceremony.

Just because she asked.

They stood in the backyard.

The shed looked smaller.

Claire hated that.

Trauma should occupy enormous buildings.

Instead, it fit inside twelve by sixteen feet of warped wood.

Daniel asked:

“Want to go inside?”

Claire thought.

“Yes.”

The chair was gone.

Workbench gone.

Dust.

Old nail holes.

She stood where she remembered being tied.

Her heart raced.

Daniel stayed by the door.

Did not enter until she asked.

Good.

Then Claire said:

“I thought you’d kill him.”

Daniel looked at her.

“In the shed?”

“Yes.”

“So did I.”

She laughed once.

Then:

“Were you scared?”

Daniel nodded.

“More than I’ve ever been on duty.”

Claire looked surprised.

“You looked calm.”

“That’s the job.”

Then he added:

“And being your dad.”

Claire cried.

Not badly.

Enough.

They left.

The next morning, demolition crew took the shed apart.

No revenge.

No fire.

Rotten boards into a dumpster.

That was all.
